Engagements

Discovery

Observation and questions, lots and lots of both.   First-hand observation of teams, environment, management and existing workflows.  We’ll be looking for things that are working well and things that are not working as well as they could.   The goal is to understand the system from concept-to-cash, how you identify new work, how you plan, how the teams work, how involved your customers are and more.

Areas of Discovery:

Organizational Culture

We will assess the overall culture at your Organization.  What is the foundational elements your employees are experiencing?  Are you a trusting and learning culture or far more traditional?

Organizational Structure

Typically this area will include creating value stream map(s) which track efforts from “concept to cash”.  This effort makes your workflow visible and is often eye-opening as you understand what really happens to turn an idea into released, working software.

Processes & Development Environment

Using both Lean and Agile methods and measures, we’ll investigate your processes and flows of value.  Are you creating an extensible, easy to update architecture?  Are your teams empowered?   How easy is it to release code?   Are you utilizing practices such as TDD and automation effectively?  Are your tools directing how you work or are you utilizing tools to support your way of working?

Co-create a Plan

The goal of the Discovery phase is for us to develop an understanding of the current state of the organization, a baseline of where we are today.

From there, we will work together to co-create a shared understanding of what is working well & what can be improved to increase the overall effectiveness of the organization.   We’ll review the current processes, structures, practices and more to understand how they are affecting the effectiveness of the organization.

We’ll use the Toyota Improvement Kata process to develop our plan to prioritize and develop a plan of attack.   It’s a simple yet very effective, and quickly learned, tool that will form the foundation of your continuous improvement efforts.   With an understanding of the current state, we will identify the “Ideal State”.  Knowing that can’t be achieved in one step, we will develop experiments, actions & measures to move to a “next target state” based on the prioritized change identified.  We will use the measures to understand our progress and use Improvement Kata process to iterate towards the Ideal State.

Become Awesome!

This is where the plan moves to action.    The goal is not to leave you needing outside experts and consultants forever.   By teaching employees within your organization the how & why to use the Improvement Kata, why we are recommending the changes we recommend, we equip you to continue the improvements long after we are gone.  Though we are just a phone call away for coaching as you need!
